Mayuzumi Yukie by Kotobukiya

Mayuzumi Yukie by Kotobukiya

Project details

Majikoi, short for Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!! was initially an adult visual novel back in 2009 before inking itself and later visualized in an anime adaptation which consisted of twelve episodes. Hobby Japan, aided by Kotobukiya for manufacturing, decided to put up a character from the series in the highly shy and katana-wielding Mayuzumi Yukie.
There’s plenty of great artwork surrounding this character, official and otherwise, though I haven’t seen any that depicts Kotobukiya’s 1/8 figure. The company’s choice fell on an rather interesting pose with Mayuzumi holding her sheathed katana in a less than practical way when fending off looming threats.

The figure features a semi-castoff option that takes it to a lingerie level and no further. With the school uniform jacket only changing its appearance in the front, one can easily swap the two half-parts.
Also worth mentioning is the character’s often frank sidekick, Matsukaze. Because of Mayuzumi’s timid nature she often resorts to ventriquilism by letting her horse-shaped phone strap voice her true feelings.

On the upside, this is the best scaled figure of Mayuzimi Yukie to date. Unfortunately, it’s also the only one available making it easier to point out any visual flaws. To mention a few, there are clearly visible vertical lines along her legs and hands that shouldn’t be there if quality control was up to par. With a castoff option there’s also quite a few gaps in her attire, again easily spotted by the human eye. To top things off there’s a transparent deformity on her left chin, hopefully isolated to my copy.

Despite its shortcomings it’s still a decent figure, though nowhere near the quality offered by Alter, Max Factory or Good Smile Company. For fans of the series or Mayuzumi Yukie in particular I’d still recommend a purchase even though my first impression of Kotobukiya was underwhelming to say the least.

I don’t know about her origin, but she looks pretty =)
Im a fan of your low key like pictures of the figure, 07 and 08 are really nice ones. Kotobukiya has a different quality standard, but sometimes they surprise with such verey good looking figures, her simple dress is quite charming.

Ah maybe I’ll watch that next ^^

I made better experiences with Koto’s normal run figures, the two exclusive ones I’ve bought so far had minor flaws, like rough edges or more prominent seamlines.

I enjoyed Majikoi. I also enjoyed Minato Softs’ other VN adapted to anime – They are my Noble Masters, or Kimiaru. Majikoi got a 2nd VN release not long after the anime finished airing too. It fleshed out some side characters and introduced some new ones which was rather nice. Yukie is a cool character, but I think Miyako is my favourite. It’s unfortunate there’s no figures of her out there.

Sadly though this figure of Yukie is rather underwhelming. It’s like Kotobukiya just gave up towards the end which is a shame. At least she has an interesting pose and is fairly faithful to her character design. The inclusion of Matsukaze is also a nice touch. You can’t have Yukie without him blurting out her true feelings.

I like the open shirt cast-off option. It’s just a shame it comes at the expense of her other display options. Bright green underwear again I see, this time the white outfit compliments the soft green better.

You made me do a double take there when you said the Blu-rays were out, I thought I’d just missed importing them from the US in my latest batch of region 1 DVD/BD. But no it was the JP release you meant, panic over :P.
